Civic Campus Underpass
2025
As a finalist in the public art commission for the Civic Campus Underpasses, Siân Bliss was invited to propose a site-specific artwork for the key pedestrian route linking the new Civic Campus development with the Thames Path. Her design sought to enrich this heavily used thoroughfare with a composition that celebrated the area’s rich visual and cultural heritage. Drawing inspiration from the local architecture, native flora and fauna, and the nearby William Morris Society, Bliss developed a scheme that honoured the legacies of both William Morris and his daughter, May. Echoes of the iconic Hammersmith Bridge appeared alongside organic patterns and motifs that responded to the rhythms of the river and the surrounding environment. The proposal was intended to bring beauty and character to an overlooked space, offering a moment of connection and quiet creativity within the city’s movement.
