2016
In the summer of 2016, Bliss was awarded a place at the NES Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, a remote fishing village situated on a northern peninsula of Iceland. The residency, housed in a repurposed fish factory, offers an open-plan shared studio space and encourages artists to draw inspiration from the surrounding environment . During her time at NES, Bliss engaged in a multidisciplinary practice, utilising materials such as oil paints, clay, and photography to create a body of work inspired by the local landscape and flora, notably the pervasive lupin flower. This period also marked the inception of her 'Post Card' project. The residency's unique setting, characterised by its 24-hour daylight during summer months, provided an immersive experience that significantly influenced Bliss's subsequent work. Upon returning to her MFA program in Experimental Animation at CalArts, she developed her first immersive solo exhibition—a multi-sensory installation that included sound, animation, and olfactory elements, such as the scent of freshly baked Kanil Snuðir (cinnamon buns) in the gallery space. A tent structure within the exhibition housed an animated waterfall and a spoken word piece in Icelandic, audible only from inside the tent. Ceramic works created during the residency were incorporated into an interactive zen garden installation, complemented by photographic works. The profound impact of the Arctic environment continues to resonate in Bliss's ongoing artistic practice.
