Between You and Me
2018
This hand-drawn animated film was created as part of Bliss’s thesis work for her MFA in Experimental Animation at CalArts and is dedicated to her father, Jonathan Bliss, who passed away in 2017 following a ten-week coma caused by a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. The film reflects on a specific and intimate moment of solace: an encounter with a woman in a hospital garden, both visitors to the intensive care ward, who offered the artist quiet comfort during an otherwise disorienting and painful period. Through subtle visual language and restrained animation, the work becomes a meditation on grief, human connection, and the brief but profound gestures that accompany moments of acute vulnerability.
